BOOK SKILLS DAYS HERE

Never done archaeology before?

Our Recorder and Surveyor Skills Days are a great place to start and take place on land or underwater. Get in the field with our Recorder Day and learn how to record a site through sketching, photography and video, then on the Surveyor Day learn how to complete a 2D survey of a site and how to use a planning frame to produce a scale drawing.

Who can get involved?

The NAS Skills Days are open to anyone who is interested: diver or non-diver, young or old and no prior learning or qualifications required. There is no age limit on the course, however we ask that those under 16 are supervised by a parent or guardian.

Does the day involve diving?

This course can either be done on an underwater wreck or a foreshore/intertidal site. The minimum diving qualification for those taking part in the diving exercises is CMAS 2-Star, BSAC Sport Diver, SAA Club Diver, PADI Advanced Open Water, or internationally recognised equivalent, with at least 25 open water UK dives.

When can I take this course?

Currently we only offer our Skills Days on demand, but we would normally expect to do around two underwater courses and two intertidal (non-diving) course per year.  Check out our events page to see if any dates are available. Alternatively, contact us to let us know that you want to attend a course, stipulating if you want to attend an underwater or an intertidal skills day and we will put your name down for the next available event.  Alternatively get some friends together and contact us to arrange a course at a time and location that suits you!

Here are the options you should consider when requesting a course:

Course type and venue: dry/classroom, muddy/foreshore, wet/inland dive centre.

Date: weekdays or weekends, consecutive or over several weeks.

Participant numbers: up to six participants (one tutor required) or up to twelve participants (two tutors required)

Cost: we would anticipate an underwater skills day to be around £85.00 per day per person and an intertidal skills day to be around £60.00 per day per person.

How can I make the most of my practical training?

We strongly recommend that Skills Days participants complete the eLearning theory beforehand.

  • Introduction to Maritime Archaeology is the theory for the Recorder Day
  • Underwater Archaeology or Intertidal Archaeology is the theory for the Surveyor day/s

Can I earn credits for participating?

NAS members can earn 5 credits/day if the Skills Days is completed with the eLearning courses.
